The Secret Is Less Dramatic Than The Headline

The Secret Is Less Dramatic Than The Headline

There is no hidden trick that gets you the lowest fare every time, and anyone selling one is guessing. But if I had to name the one lever that most people ignore, it would be the bank offer waiting on the payment page. For years I compared base fares across apps, picked the lowest and paid. The offer sitting one screen later was often worth more than the gap I had spent twenty minutes chasing.

Why The Base Fare Is Only Half The Story

Two platforms can show almost the same fare for the same flight. What changes is everything added afterwards, such as convenience fees and the discounts tied to your card or payment method. The cheapest option on the search page is not always the cheapest at the end, and the difference can be larger than the difference in base fares.

In my experience MakeMyTrip has more often had the stronger bank offers at checkout, which is why I look there before anywhere else. Goibibo is worth a quick comparison too, since the active offers differ from week to week. Neither wins every time.

How To Actually Use Bank Offers

Check the offers before you compare platforms and not after. A decent fare with a good offer on your card often beats a slightly lower fare with nothing attached.

Keep two or three of your cards in mind. The best offer is not always on the card you usually reach for first, and it is worth a few seconds to see which one qualifies.

Read the terms before you pay. Offers usually have a minimum booking value, a cap on the discount, a list of eligible cards and a validity window. An offer that looks generous can be unavailable for your fare or your card, and it is better to find that out before the payment screen.

Compare the final price after the discount. The advertised percentage matters less than the number you actually pay.

The Routine Around The Offer

Offers work best on top of a sensible fare, so I still do the basics. I open the fare calendar and look at nearby dates before fixing mine. I book about three to eight weeks ahead for normal travel and earlier for peak periods like Diwali. I choose a Tuesday or Wednesday over a Friday or Sunday when my plans allow it. Booking inside the last week is almost always the costliest way to fly.

Where People Go Wrong

The most common mistake is picking a more expensive fare just to qualify for an offer. Check that the saving is real once you compare it with the cheaper fare you were looking at. The second is assuming an offer will still be there tomorrow, since they change often. The third is skipping the terms and finding out at the payment screen.

The Short Version

Look at the final price and not the base fare. Check offers across two platforms before you pay, and let your card decide where to book. Then rely on the calendar, the booking window and a midweek day to get the fare itself as low as it can go. That is the whole secret, and it is a good deal more reliable than any trick with a dramatic name.
